Have you ever felt like your mind was so full that it was buzzing with thoughts? Maybe you even started feeling tension in your forehead and jaw or as if you needed to just flip an off switch and silence everything?
Let’s say your mind is so full of thoughts that you have your current to-do list on play along with this coming spring, fall and next winter! (Ahem, yeah..I’m talking about myself here)
Here’s the thing, you don’t have to sit in that mental noise. As I write this I can clearly see my list of to-do’s floating around in my head. Things like “Buy more tissue” and “return son’s flute” are actually floating past my eyeballs. LOL! So, how can you (we) calm the noisy chaos stuffing our minds? I may have mentioned my love of checklists and while this trick is not exactly a checklist, it’s similar.
Now before you run away, hear me out. You may not be a checklist kinda person and that’s okay but I encourage you to give this a try, I mean honestly at this point, what can it hurt? Annnnd the best part is, you already have all of the resources needed for this hack. So what is it? It’s called a Brain Dump!
Had a long day at work or a rough day parenting ? Brain Dump what’s weighing your mind down. Now, before arguing that you don’t have time or a quiet space or even a pen and paper, let me stop you because a Brain Dump can be done anywhere and it’s a game changer.
So what if there’s no cozy space available in your place - grab a seat on a pile of laundry in your walk in closet (I didn’t say the laundry had to be clean). Hide in a pantry or your coat closet ..you can even fake bubbly guts for a moment of quiet sanity in the bathroom alone ..just find you a space that you can freely think in and go there. Paper, pencil, pen..these aren’t a necessity either unless you don’t have a smart phone but 9 / 10 you’re reading this post on a smart phone which means you have a note pad of sorts that you can use for this activity.
Now, let’s dive in to why Brain Dumps can declutter your mind and unlock your mental chill zone.
What’s a Brain Dump, Anyway?
If you’ve ever seen the movie Inside Out then your mind is also forming a similar image as mine when I say to imagine little worker people in hard hats unloading your mental clutter from the shelves of your mind and into their little wheelbarrows. No? Okay, okay for those of you who’ve never seen Inside Out (you’re missing out, it’s a super cute movie) picture unloading your mental clutter onto paper or your favorite notes app in your phone. It’s kinda like that feeling of wanting to phone a friend to tell them about your day - ya know..once you talk it out you tend to feel better. Only with Brain Dumps you’re free to be as raw, honest or nit picky as you please. It’s not about being neat or organized — it’s about giving yourself permission to get it all out, no judgment.
I’ve found that even writing down or typing out (for those of us on our devices) something as small as “wash school uniforms” or “buy milk” can start the process of mentally releasing the bigger worries and stressors on my mind.
The act of writing it down is like hitting the reset button for your brain. It takes everything that feels heavy in your mind and makes it visible, which immediately lightens the mental load.
Why should you try it?
Let’s break it down:
Clear Mind = Clear Life: When your mind is stuffed full of scattered thoughts, it’s hard to focus or feel at peace. Have you ever found yourself rereading something several times before it would sink in or maybe you couldn’t remember something as simple as your work password that you put in everyday ? (I’m virtually nodding my head because, I’m her, I’m she, she is me! Lol) Been there, done that. I’ve literally had to pause, take a deep breath and center myself taking out my phones notes app or whatever pen and paper was closest to write down what was on my mind before my password could come to my mind.
Toodles Overwhelm: have you ever been so overwhelmed by your todo list that you feel stuck? Suffocated, even or closed in? A brain dump helps break things down into manageable pieces. You can see what’s urgent, what can wait, and what you can toss out and never look back at.
Productivity Boost: Once you can see your thoughts laid out in front of you, you can start taking the next step. Whether you schedule tasks or set reminders, seeing everything in one place makes it easier to take action!
Mental Clarity = Emotional Clarity : Sometimes, your brain is holding on to worries or emotions that you don’t even realize are there. Writing it down gives you the space to process feelings and let them go. It’s like clearing out the emotional clutter too!
How to Do a Brain Dump (It’s So Easy!)
You don’t need to overthink this - sage advice coming from an over-thinker! 😉 Grab your writing utensils and just start writing! Here’s a guide to get you started:
Find a Quiet Spot: (Remember, closets, pantries and bathrooms count too!) Get comfy - this isn’t a race.
Set a Timer (optional): don’t let “I don’t have time” be an excuse. Think about how often you’ve blown 5 minutes scrolling online or worrying. Set your timer and write the first things that come to mind within that 5 minutes. Go!
Let It All Flow: Remember that I said wrote down whatever comes to mind ? Even if it’s random or seems insignificant, Get. It. Out. “Buy hand soap” “Did I leave the laundry pods in the hot trunk”? - (Sound super specific? Yeah, I’ve done this one) “remember to breathe!” Yup, that too. Sometimes our overwhelm can have a grip on us so tight that we aren’t remember to take a breath..kinda like that moment your trainer reminds you to breathe during an exercise and only then do you realize you weren’t breathing (I’m nodding my head again).
Read Through It: Once you’re done take a minute to read over your list. Take notice of the things that might be minor and can be done quickly, (hello, “buy hand soap”). For the things that might need more attention, it’s okay - you can now come up with a game plan to complete those tasks!
Organize & Prioritize: you can now break things into digestible categories. “Urgent” “later” “I’ll get to it” and even “not happening” (because listen, not everything deserves brain space). You can set reminders or deadlines or even write it on your bathroom mirror in lipstick, whatever keeps the momentum going!
Tips for Success
*Be honest with yourself - This is for YOU and no one else. So, let it all out. It doesn’t have to be pretty, if it were it probably wouldn’t be weighing on you.
*Make It a Habit - Brain Dumps can be daily, weekly, or just when you feel that mental noise building up, make it apart of your routine to write it out so that you can plan it out. Often it’s when we don’t have a plan that sends us spiraling.
*Celebrate the Release: After completing your Brain Dump, take a moment to breathe in to the count of 3 & exhale to the count of 3 (to the count of 5 works too). It’s like hitting “pause” on your overactive brain and finding your calm.
Finally
You deserve to flip the “off” switch and quiet the noise. A Brain Dump gives you the space to breathe, focus, and regain control of your mental space. And, guess what?! It’s FREE.99 and you can do it anywhere, anytime, for as long or as little as you feel.
I encourage you to try this exercise and let the thoughts flow! I know the first time I ever heard of this, I gave my good friend a hard side eye and now here I am using it and encouraging others to use it too. Don’t knock it until you try it!
If you’ve tried a brain dump before, I’d love to hear how it worked for you! Or if you have any tips or questions drop them in the comments. If you’ve never heard of a Brain Dump until this post, drop a 1 in the comments.
Blissfully, Mali 🦋
